Casey: I'm Casey, Berglund your host for the purpose map podcast and the founder of worthy and well. [00:01:00] And this is a solo episode. We are well on our way into the worthy and well-paid series. And there are quite a few episodes to come with some special guests with some community members and a few more solo episodes with me.
Casey: And I'd like to start shifting the energy in the solo episodes toward focusing on money, making money offers sales. As it relates to entrepreneurship. You know, I can't necessarily speak to a corporate path. That's not my path. I can interview people who have expertise in that area. And what I know is business.
Casey: I'm sitting here in a phone booth in my coworking space. And, uh, work nicer is the space that I go to. So I'm surrounded by entrepreneurs. I'm surrounded by entrepreneurial [00:02:00] mindsets and some of those mindsets and behaviors associated. With those mindsets I resonate with, I aligned with and others don't and people have been asking me lately when I've been telling them about how I'm writing a book on embodied leadership and the work that I do in general, people have been asking, like, what does that mean?
Casey: What does it mean to be an embodied leader? How is that different? And in this episode, I'm going to let you in a little bit more. It means to be an embodied leader in the context of entrepreneurship so that you can perhaps have modeled for you, a new paradigm for business, a new paradigm for leadership, a new way of being here we go.
Casey: You're ready for this today. I'm going to share with you six qualities, mindsets actions of an embodied leader, entrepreneur. You're ready for that. [00:03:00] Here's the first one, an embodied leader, entrepreneur finds clarity through cloudiness, even if it requires patients, one of the gifts of embodiment or in other words, paying attention to your body and letting your body lead is that embodiment offers you greater access to.
Casey: A whole other level of consciousness, body consciousness, and this is incredibly useful for decision-making. If you've watched my Ted talk, I talk about how, when you pay attention to the body and you let your body lead, you have access to a bunch of information that helps with purposeful decision-making.
Casey: So an embodied leader finds clarity. Through cloudiness because they have access to more tools for discernment, more tools around what they need more tools around. What's right. For them. [00:04:00] What I also mean by this finding clarity through cloudiness is that an, an embodied leader, entrepreneur, uh, practices, resilience builds resilience by way of the nervous system builds resilience and commitment.
Casey: Commitment to clarity, commitment to the path, commitment to self-actualization and growth and embody leader. Entrepreneur finds clarity through cloudiness because an embodied leader must have an awareness of who they are, who their life giving clients are and what their life giving clients want. That they'll happily pay for.
Casey: This is part of what it means to be an entrepreneur and be in business
Casey: the whole way along the entrepreneurial path. There are many decisions to be made. There are many moments [00:05:00] where questions arise and. Problems arise challenges that need to be worked through. There are many moments where the cloudiness comes an embodied leader. Entrepreneur finds clarity through that cloudiness clarity on how to structure their offers, clarity on their sales process, clarity on their marketing process, clarity on when to hire team members.
Casey: There are so many decisions that need to be made and. When you can access the wisdom of your body, you find clarity through accessing a realm of wisdom that supports you the next point and embodied leader. Entrepreneur leads with authenticity over ego even went up against a challenge. [00:06:00] Let me make sure that I say that ego.
Casey: It's not a bad thing. We need an ego or a sense of identity or a part of ourselves that keeps us safe. There's purpose and ego, and an embodied leader. Entrepreneur leads with authenticity over ego. I mentioned earlier that finding clarity on you know, who you are, who your life giving clients are, what you're here for.
Casey: All of that's important. And when you have that clarity and you know who you are. You ground into that wisdom, you allow your true self to be seen. You allow yourself to be authentic. You have an awareness, a greater awareness when you're an embodied leader of your defense mechanisms and your patterns and how you react, how your nervous system reacts in certain circumstances, leading with authenticity over ego.[00:07:00]
Casey: Even when you're up against a challenge, you know, here's a really present example of this. I worked with a new client just a couple of weeks ago, who took part in a clarity of purpose, private workshop. And there was such great energy in our interactions leading up and even throughout the workshop, uh, it just felt like there was such alignment happening.
Casey: And then afterward I followed up with this client just to see how they were and to see how the wisdom was integrating. And after a couple of unresponded to followups, I checked in once more saying like, just checking in that all is well. And they responded back to me saying that they were disappointed.
Casey: They were disappointed in the result of the workshop. Now this is a bit of a surprise to me because it felt so aligned. And [00:08:00] because I'm more used to people feeling like they get this incredible aha that then can help shift the direction of where they go from. And yet this feedback was, you know, some might call it negative or constructive feedback.
Casey: They were disappointed with our work. There was a bunch of other stuff happening in this client's life as well. And I received this email and felt this contraction in my body like, oh my goodness. I, I always want for my clients to be raving fans, you know? Um, I always want for them to feel like they're getting the results that they came there for.
Casey: Et cetera. And so I felt this like sinking feeling in my body and I felt like in the past I could have, you know, reacted to that sinking feeling, either reacted by, I don't know, maybe responding in a defensive way [00:09:00] or a way that I. Regret at a different point in time, but I took a step back and kind of tuned in and sensed the energy of the email and paid attention to my own body and leaned in with authenticity and with the skills that I have, the coaching skills that I have and responded by acknowledging and validating this client's experience and inviting conversation about it, leaning into that discomfort.
Casey: And then. We had a call and I want to honor this client. If you're listening, you know who you are, specifically the courage and consciousness to lean into the discomfort and have a conversation about what. Didn't go as planned, you know, and both of us lead with authenticity over ego, both of us lead with our hearts rather than our defense mechanisms [00:10:00] and had a conversation that actually became a transformational moment between us and for my client.
Casey: So an embodied leader, entrepreneur doesn't back away or back down from constructive criticism. They lead with authenticity rather than ego. I told a couple of friends about this experience and, you know, uh, actually one person in my, in my workspace, who's also an entrepreneur and. He said to me, oh, I would just leave it.
Casey: I would just let go, you know, like, forget that client move on, you know? And I thought to myself like, oh yeah, that, that might be a typical response, but that's not the way of the embodied leader and embodied leader leads with authenticity over ego, even when up against a challenge. And I would maybe add to that trusts that there is always wisdom [00:11:00] in the discomfort.
Casey: My third point today, an embodied leader, entrepreneur values alignment over exertion. Even when there's lots to get done, it's all too easy in our current culture and context to get into busy, busy, busy go, go, go mode and burnout and embodied leader. Entrepreneur keeps. Uh, watch on how the body is feeling, pays attention to the body, honors the body to value alignment over exertion means to, for me anyway, to slow down, to speed up when I'm tired or I notice tension in my body, or I start to feel anxiety rise or stress of needing to get more done.
Casey: That's my cue to actually pause, to meditate, to go for a walk, to [00:12:00] go to the gym, to slow things down, or take a step back so that I can bring my energy into alignment first before taking the next step. And what I find when I do that is, well, I collapsed time. The thing that needs to be done takes less time or has done with more ease and more flow rather than having.
Casey: An embodied leader, entrepreneur who values alignment overexertion takes naps, rests, and choose a self care over burnout. I've got three more for you here and embodied leader, entrepreneur chooses imperfection over inaction, even when it's vulnerable now. If you're listening to this likely you are someone who has high standards, who wants to do good quality work.
Casey: If you're an entrepreneur, you want to serve your clients [00:13:00] very well, you choose excellence. You're good at what you do. Like energy attracts like energy. So ask me how I know these things. Choosing imperfection over in action, even when it's vulnerable is so, so important. An embodied leader entrepreneur has the courage to put their work out there.
Casey: Me be even before it's perfectly ready and embodied leader. Entrepreneur knows that that they're not here to create Nepal. To create some perfect little offer or service on their own inside the confines of their own mind. They know that they need to share with their potential life-giving clients. They need to ask questions of their potential life, giving clients and their supportive partners.
Casey: They need to get feedback. They need to [00:14:00] iterate, and that takes courage. It takes choosing imperfection, letting things be out in public to be judged, to potentially be rejected, even. Imperfection over in action. Taking action is really important for the embodied leader. Entrepreneur next, an embodied leader, entrepreneur values, collaboration over competition.
Casey: Even when they catch themselves in scarcity. An embodied leader knows that there was, there is no one else. With the special gift that they have an embodied leader knows that each person on this planet has their own unique way, their own purpose. So when running a purpose-driven business, the embodied leader can stand in their power and claim their uniqueness and [00:15:00] trust that.
Casey: No one else can really take the slice of pie from them. You know, if, if a client chooses to work with someone else over them, it's for some reason. So, and nobody leader, entrepreneur stays in their own lane. Yes. They have an awareness about what people are doing around them, but they don't let it sabotage them.
Casey: They don't let it almost force a leaking of their past. The embodied leader collaborates rather than competes. They notice the gifts in other people and maybe ask to join forces rather than to play against one another. They don't step on other's toes in order to get ahead. This is what I mean by choosing collaboration over competition.[00:16:00]
Casey: Even when you catch yourself in scarcity. So sometimes when you know, you're having cashflow issues or, um, money is short or maybe there's stressors that make it harder to feel secure, running a business. That's when the tendency to compete is heightened. Can you notice. That scarcity and choose collaboration anyway, an embodied leader, entrepreneur collaborates, rather than competes.
Casey: All right, we're ready for the last one. Now this one's actually my favorite and I think most directly ties into our theme of being worthy and well-paid and embodied leader. Entrepreneur focuses on making money over martyrdom. Even if it's not the default under capitalism [00:17:00] businesses need to make money.
Casey: Otherwise they're expensive hobbies for the smart, ambitious, spiritually curious purpose-driven entrepreneur, especially woman entrepreneur. I know that there can be a tendency towards martyrdom towards people-pleasing, towards over-giving toward giving from an empty cup. We're trained to be that way. As women in our society, an embodied leader, entrepreneur knows that making money is credit critical to the health success.
Casey: And integration of their business and they value making money over martyrdom
Casey: and embodied leader. Entrepreneur looks at their money. They get clear on their numbers. They know what they need to make personally, and also what their business needs to make [00:18:00] to pay them what they need. So that. It can be a healthy system.
Casey: I don't know, a single woman, entrepreneur friend who hasn't fallen into the trap of martyrdom I have too. And how could I not, you know, I was raised by a mother who, uh, her idol was mother Teresa, you know, and, and the give, give, give, give, give without boundary. It seems like a virtue also came with a price to pay that price, being resentment, anger, burnout, you know, and it's really important to not carry this essence of martyrdom into our businesses.
Casey: The embodied leader knows the importance of boundaries or standards. If you prefer that word. Making money [00:19:00] is part of a standard to run a healthy business. So again, I'm going to repeat those six points. An embodied leader, entrepreneur finds clarity through cloudiness, even if it requires patience leads with authenticity over ego, even when up against a challenge.
Casey: Values alignment over exertion, even when there's lots to get done, chooses imperfection over inaction, even when it's vulnerable, collaborates over competes. Even when they're moments of scarcity and values, making money over martyred. Even when it's not the default there, you have it. What, one of those [00:20:00] mindsets or qualities of the embodied leader, entrepreneur stood out to you to integrate?
Casey: I invite you to choose one, to contemplate, to journal about, to integrate into your life. Whether or not you're an entrepreneur. Can you embody that concept and see what happens?
